[Review] Odyssey Elementary stem
   by bikerinthebuff | 01 Apr 2007 4:22 pm

Okay, to start off, I’ve had this stem on my bike on and off for around a year and a half. At first when I got it I thought it was decent looking. I also noticed that the box it came in almost weighed more than the damn stem itself. I put it on and I could feel automatically how much lighter my bike was in the front end. That’s not stretching the truth seeing as how I lost a half a pound. So I was pleased at that too. So all in all the first impression was that it was great. The next day I went to our local park, and I was new at riding when I bought it, so I was still working on the spine. And occasionally I would land a bit flat. So I did the spine, and I ended up landing flat of course. My bars went from about 90 degrees to 45 degrees on just that one case. So I wasn’t totally happy at that. It kept slipping time and time again, so I traded it to a friend for a sprocket and other stem, then he gave it to another friend, he gave it back to me, I sold it, he sold it, and then I got it given back to me. So I thought hey, I’ll try it again. By that time the knurled part wasn’t knurled anymore. So I thought I would just mess up my new bars, but it ended up working greatly. Hasn’t slipped once. If it’s a worn in stem my rule is to tighten it till you can feel the bolt peeking out of the other side. So all in all I love it. It gave me trouble at first, but now it’s the best I could ask for, never mind the lightest...

On the bike.

PROS

-good looking
-simple design
-easy to install
-super light

CONS

-theres a break in period
-not knee friendly
-doesnt come off easily

I’ll give this stem an 8.5/10 because it’s light and simple, but sometimes it leaves some to be desired.
