Picking the right cables... (odyssey, snafu etc.)
   by Trey Hayden | 20 Aug 2005 12:30 pm

Snafu Astroglide, TIP Plus slic cable, Odyssey Slic cables, and of course, the odyssey linear cable have probably been choices for the type of stopping power you desire for your ride, but all riders have thought "is there really that much of a difference?"

Being involved in flatland, I need a fast, responsive brake speed that will lock in a heartbeat to save my gorgeous face from an untimely make out session with solid concrete. So, to help save YOUR pretty face from a brake malfunction, here's my experience with brake cables...

First cable used, stock bike cables: ...i don't need to tell another rider how badly stock cables suck, next topic

>>>Odyssey Slic Cables:

The Slic Cables are orgasmically smooth to pull, I absolutly love these cables to death. However, my love of these things doesn't mean I'd ever ride them. The cables are very smooth, and in their next cable (the linear slic) they figured out a way to get ride of the weakness in the cable. The cable isn't good at resisting bend, in fact, it can get a bend in it and have that spot for the remainder of its use. Don't even try to use this thing with front brakes, especially if you're like me and enjoy having a powerful spring in those brakes.

>>>Next cable choice: Odyssey Linear Cable:

Odyssey linear cable

Aaaaah, yes, the famous Odyssey Slic Cable. The Cable of choice for most riders these days, and for a reason. The Odyssey Linear Cables have a wide range of good features, they're as smooth as the a$$ on the hottie next door, the housing is stiff, so street riders, don't worry about the floppy cable slapping your fingers, but if you've just seen the hottie next door, floppy is probably no longer a useful term. It's also really cool, many different colors and such, very cool cable. I love this thing. I used it until it crapped out on me after 4 months of use, this thing outlasted my evolvers, that's devotion to stopping power right there.

>>>Snafu Astroglide cables

This is the cable I refer to as the "unsung hero" of the braking community. This is one of the cables on the market for stopping, better than the Linear Cables in my opinion. The geniuses at Snafu made the cable with thicker lining cables than the linear cable to keep those brakes working for longer. The only color they come in is KICKA$$ CLEAR, that way you can see the cool inner wire and the screenprinted graphics. The ONLY gripe and the ONLY reason these brakes are 2nd in my brake list, is because of a slight flaw in the making. Those cool inner linings are a bi%ch to deal with, the people at snafu made them too close to the outside, so when you cut the cable for ultimate customization (doesn't that sound sexier than "changing the length"?), you kinda can have those bi%ches pop out on you and go into your fingertip. There's also some trouble getting the cable end on them. These are VERY high end cables, go you.

OK, now for the last cable in my list, THE NOKKON! HA! Loser, anyone who pays 50 dollars for a flashy a$$ed cable is just plain retarded, don't even talk to me. No, the best cable on the market in my opinion is...

THE TIP Plus CABLE!

I Absolutly ADORE this cable, there's better that THREE DOLLARS can go into on your bike. If you were infatuated with the Nokkon cable, think that you could've had 16 of these for the same price, and look at all the colors!!! This is the only kind of cable I ride in my bike, I just bought another set of them to use for dual rear cables. The cable is manueverable enough to bend around many tight spots on the bike, yet SMOOOTH AAAASS HE111 to make sure you'll never know it when it is. Great to work with, very easy to cut and customize, I love this cable, buy one, they're only 3 dollars on some shop. Thanks for reading, enjoy! Below is my bike with the Tip Plus Cable in use on the front brakes, so you know i didn't lie about it...
