Brake Supplements Test
   by nutsgeezer | 20 Jul 2005 12:03 am

I decided that seeing as my brake wasn't dialled, and Id heard countless amounts of things can be added to rims to make them brake better, Id run a test.

First I got my equipment. I'd heard several people say coke and ketchup boosted your brakes, I also tried some other stuff. Id also heard that rubbing alcohol was great, but failing to have this, I used Teacher's scotch Whiskey.

As you can see, I also had lemon, and a mixture of sunflower oil, brown sugar and lemon (3 things that I just knew wouldnt mix).
The bog roll (soft and quilted for a smoother wipe) was to apply the supplement to the rim.
I have a chrome odyssey hazard light rim. I know you shouldnt need a supplement on a chrome rim but I just wanted to do the experiment. I also use a primo e-brake.

First I applied sed supplement to the toilet paper:

Then I waited approx 2 minutes (I dont know why, but thats what people always say you should do). After each test I cleaned and dried my rim and brake pads before adding something else. While waiting, I played with some russian dolls

The results are as follows:

Lemon: It improved the braking slightly, but didnt seem worth all the hassle. 4/10

Coke: The coke was strange. It improved braking a little when rolling forward, but when rolling backwards it made the brake worse. Once I dried it off the rim it was sticky, and was slightly better. Its probably corrosive as well. 3/10

Ketchup: This stuff was shit. Id seen the tip to use it on the internet, and I guess that person was a sadist. Even when wiped it stopped the brakes working completely. It was a bastard to get off as well. I give it 0/10

Mixture of crap: This didnt work either. 0/10

Whiskey: Holy Crap! this stuff is amazing! it makes your brakes squeak really loud, but also improves them a lot. Other brands may not work however, and for the price, you are probably better off just tweaking your brakes a bit more.

Honey: I left this untill last as it is soo sticky. I also didnt wait 2 minutes as I didnt see the point. It improved the brakes a lot, but took the shine from the rim. When I came to clean it off, there was black marks on it where it had stripped the pads a little.

Conclusion:

This better have helped someone as it took me over half an hour! So clearly you can get better braking by adding a supplement to your rims, but they probably dont last very long. You're better off just adjusting your brake!!!
