Re-packing Unsealed Pedals
   by Danot2serious1 | 10 Aug 2005 7:13 pm

Unsealed pedals, have one downside, they are unsealed. Because of this, they collect dirt and they will spin slower and rougher. They should be periodically cleaned and regreased for maximum life and perfomance.  In this article I will show you how to do this.

Here is a picture of all the parts in an unsealed pedal.

The first thing you need to do is to remove the dustcover from your pedal.

Next, you will have to remove the pedal hardware. First remove the locknut (12mm socket), then the washer, and finally the cone(15mm socket) from your pedal spindle.

Remove your pedal spindle from the pedal body. Be prepared to catch around 20 BB's. After you have everything out, you can start cleaning the parts. Clean the pedal body out, all grease dirt and debris should be wiped off. Clean the spindle and the pedal hardware (locknut, washer and cone). Now you are left with a lot of greasy metal balls. The quickest and simplest way to clean them is to dump them into a sock and slosh them around and rub them against the side of the sock. Pinch and twist to bottom of the sock under running water. You may also use a soap or degreaser to get them really clean. Just pour some into the sock and rub the BB's with the sides of the sock. Rinse the sock out,  wring it dry, and dump the balls onto a napkin or paper towel. Get 'em nice and shiny.

Get everything together. Grease the inside of the pedal body and all the hardware.

1.Put half the bb's in the shallow end
2. Insert spindle through shallow end of body and guide it to the exit at the deeper end of the body.
3. Turn the pedal over, while keeping pressure on the back of the spindle to keep the newly placed bb's in.
4. Put the other half of the bb's in the deeper end of the body.

You will need a pedal wrench to hold the spindle while you are doing these steps. Tighten the cone (15mm socket) enough so that there is no play but the pedal will still spin smoothly. Then tighten the locknut (12mm socket) down hard. Next unscrew the cone until it is snug with the locknut. The pedal should spin perfect now. If it doesn't, just play around with the cone and locknut till it feels right.

Ahhhhh, smooth spinning bliss!
