[Review] PRIMO Cyclone hubguard
   by redbone | 02 Dec 2005 9:35 am

At the very beginning of this season (maybe 6 months ago), I've ordered many parts from albes, and decided that I needed something to protect my hub/spokes. I was on a really low budget, after all other purshases, so after seeing a primo cyclone hubguard, for 15$ I decided to give it a try.

Just after getting it shipped, it looked like a decent hubguard, didn't seem to thin, was very light (1.7oz), looked good.

New

After riding with it for a few days it worked well, grinds felt better (I sometimes ended grinding on dropouts withoug a guard) and smoother, however after a few grinding sessions on concrete ledges, I've noticed it being a bit bent, one side was closer to the spokes than the other one. I kept riding it until I saw it touching the spokes already. It all happened during first month of using it. Then I took it off, and filed down one side that was touching the spokes, but the metal had became softer on the bent, and I had to file it nearly after everyride as it was bending more and more everyday, so the only way to make it work again was to turn it round making it's other side to work.

One side grinded

Another problem appeared. I keep my wheel pretty slammed to the dropouts, and there wasn't enough space for the anti-spin device (which isn't removeable and can't be put on the other side), so I had to file it one more time.

All twisted, unusable

After putting it the other way, I knew it wasn't going to be holding well, but I was happy for another month or so, and it started hitting spokes again. Didn't bother grinding it anymore, took it off and I'm getting the fbm guard for another season.

Twisted, messed up

In conclusion, this hubguard isn't worth even 15$, unless you don't grind alot, and maybe only ledges with metal copings, rails, but NOTHING harder (however, you don't really need a guard in that case)

Value 4/10 (a few points for cheap price, and for making a FEW grind smoother)

Price: around 15$
