[Review] Profile Race Cranks
   by Michael Hardman | 14 Apr 2006 6:25 pm

What comes around, goes around!

Mention the name 'Profile' and imediatly BMXers's rave on about their legendary reputation for cranks.  I may be wrong but the Profile Race cranks we see today are a direct evolution of the cranks Profile made many many years ago, not much if nothing has changed.  The 48 micro splined genious is still with us today as a widely accepted standard for crank axles as well as the no existance of a pinch bolt to keep the crnaks from falling off the axle remains.

Enough of the history lesson which I'm no good at, down to the business of reviewing a crank.  I've had my Profiles since I've started BMX infasct I had a set before I did BMX on my mountain bike., they were the only make I considered and they still are today.  Why you ask, well there ar emany reasons.  Firstly they are a a testimant to theircreators engineering magnificance, 48 mirco splined axle, no pinch bolt, perfect machining meant a super tight fit that stayed snug whatever happened.  Then there was the samll point about lifetime warrenty on that as far as I know Profile have honoured pretty well over the years.  What more could a BMXer want apart from the above, well cheap cranks, Profile had that covered and readily avaliable spares, Profile had this but they werent cheap.  The crnaks come with very clear and detailed instructions on how to set them up properly and are even supplied with all the relevant tools, spacers and grease.

I have a titanium axle upgrade on my cranks and titanium flush bolts but there for another review

Pros:

+ Cheap

+ Reliable

+ A design that has stood the test of time

+ Readily available spares although a bit pricey

+ Light

+ Lifetime warrenty on crank arms and axle

+ Comes with all the tools, spacers, grease to setup.

Cons:
- No warrenty on titanium parts.

Profile cranks are the only cranks I will even consider to buy these days due to their reputation as the best crank makers in the biking industry.  I can't see anyone having problems with these cranks and even if they do Profile are really friendly and great at helping out.  My advise don't but a titanium axle for them, they are nothing but a pain in the arse.
