[How To] Hop Barspin
   by Charles | 25 Jul 2006 10:41 am

Having learned wheelie barspins and small no-handers in the past you decide you want to learn hop barspins. (Also known as bus drivers.)

You probably want to be able to hop at least as high as a 2-liter bottle of pop to simplify that.

Also Shinguards can increase confidence.

Here is a few tips I put together that might help.

First off you want a nice flat place to try them on. Preferably an empy parking lot, or your driveway. You can try them into grass to. You must ride at a slowish pace.

Hop Barspins are actually quite simple you just have to work your confidence up and just do it. They can be scary its something about tossing your bars in mid air that gives your thought of landing with your tire sideways and flying to the cement. I have never gottin seriously hurt trying barspins, one encounter I fell on my back. Thats it most of the time I can jumpoff in time and grab the seat.

I found it easier to throw right when your front wheel has reached its peak rather then leveled out and thats because you either A) Dont have to hop as high or B) Throw as hard due to your bars having more time to get around you can stay more relaxed.

It does not matter which way you throw the bars or which foot you have forward, just do what is most comfortable but if your throwing your bars clockwise then you throw with your right hand. You dont have to pinch your seat although you may feel more comfortable if so. I myself learned barspins with a jammed seat. While throwing your bars you want your legs tucked back beyond bar clearance which should be the sides of your seat either pinching the seat but I myself learned hop bars without pinching so I cant really go much into that, and to keep you from falling back or not leveling out you MUST lean forward with your upper body to stay centered considering you lower body is tucked back so far you have to balance that weight out.

After throwing just bring your forwards hard round to the 270 position to catch bars as it comes round and to bring it back in if that makes sense. For clockwise you throw with your right hand and catch with your left.

Working up to a full barspins you can try hop half barspins first. They are REALLY easy trust me. This is how I learned hop barspins. First I tried low hop half barspins then testing my ability I hopped as high as I could and did a slow hop half barspin after 20-30 of these later I decided I wanted to do a full barspin so I hopped started a high hop at my peak I threw the bars nearly as hard as I could caught the bars (Timing you should know from regular pop and throw barspins) and wa-la. Needless to say I was pretty siked and did 5 more then decided I should try 180 barspins.. Well lets just say that didnt work out as well but to this day I have landed approxamitely 3 180 barspins and I find them as as regular hop barspins for some reason probably shouldnt go into much detail on this but when you do try them if your spinning your bars clockwise and do the 180 counter clockwise and try them on a tiny slope.

Also some other members tips

you don't lean back really, you just wanna get your knees back and then you have to get your upper body foreward to balance. if you just lean back, then yes, your bike will shoot out.

practice with manual barspins first

Here is a video of me doing a few and 'trying' a 180 barspin. Note: This video is almost a year old this was the night I did my first hop barspin.

Lets Review

Ride at a slow pace

Beginning your hop your ready to pinch your seat your legs must be beyond bar reach and reaching your peak your throw your bars with your right hand (if clockwise) having your legs tucked back beyond seat either pinching or not and lean forward with your upper body, bring your hand back and catch the bars with your left hand first and ride away.

Prerequests : Pop N' Throw barspins, Small No-Handers.

Most imporant thing : JUST DO IT
