[HowTo] Cut Your Dropouts
   by NZbmxer | 01 Nov 2006 11:02 am

Yes, I know, most of you will know how, but for those of you who don't, here is a very successful method for cutting your dropouts.

You will need:

-Angle Grinder
-Metal cut-off blade for Angle grinder. I recommend "Flexofit 100X2.5X16 reinforced metal cut-off wheel"
-Metal grinding disc attachment
-Small Handfile
-Pencil and eraser
-Black Permanent Marker OR white grease pencil (For dark colours).
-Tools to remove rear wheel
-Your Dropouts

After:

Method:
1. Decide what shape and size you would like your dropouts, and gently sketch this shape onto your dropouts with a PENCIL. Use the eraser if you need to. If your frame is a dark colour, mark the shape very carefully with a grease pedal. If desired, you can make a template to get each dropout exactly the same as the other.

2.When your dropouts have been marked with pencil, remove your back wheel and go over the lines with the Black permanent marker. (If your frame is dark, you have no need to do this-obviously???)

3.Attach the cut-off blade to the angle grinder, and plug it in. Make sure that where you are working is adequate, for the job-(Your garage, or outside of your house- not on the grass; it will burn). Set your bike up on the ground, or work bench, with the cranks rotated so that the bike wont flip and flop around. It can also help to remove your front wheel as well, and tape your chain up to your downtube. Use common-sense.

4.With the angle grinder on, gently ease it into (he best starting point of your) dropout, and when it is through, carefully ease it around your dropout along the cut-lines. Cut on the other side of the slot in the same way.
Do the same to your other dropouts. (This will create a hell-load of sparks!)

5.Now attach the grinding disc, and gently touch up any rough patches. When the bulk has been done, use a file to do the rest.

6.Wait for the dropouts to cool fully, and put your wheel/wheels back on the bike, and enjoy.

note: steps 3-5 may require help from someone, if you are inexperienced.

You now have your dropouts cut, and will no-longer be made fun of!!! JK

Enjoy.......
Any feedback would be great....
