[Article] Getting Basic Safety Protection
   by rgy1993 | 20 Nov 2006 1:27 pm

Basic Protection Equipment (that you should be wearing)
Ok this mainly applies to park riders but I’ve seen a fare share of people break arms, limbs, heads, etc because they weren’t wearing safety equipment... even I myself have been ther because I didn’t wear a helmet… so I thought id make an article to tell all those new people to bmx what you should wear so you don’t spend the rest of your life in remedial class or in a wheelchair. So.. here goes..

1. Helmet
This is probably the most important piece of protection equipment because it protects your head.. And guess what’s in your head kids.. That’s right.. Your brain!! And if you wack your head and damage your brain.. your either dead… or stuck in a friggin wheelchair all your life.. and the worst thing is.. you wont be able to ride BMX anymore!!! Half cap helmets cost about $20 US for a good one and make sure theres the little sticker inside to tell you that its bike certified. So remember kids… if your gonna go do stupid things on ramps you should be wearing a helmet…

I normally wear a half cap myself but a full face is also an option if you wanna go that extra distance and really love Dave Mirra that much…. Here’s my helm incase no one knows what they look like:

2. Gloves
Another useful piece of protection equipment.. but contrary to popular belief… gloves DO NOT stop blisters. Your skin is still rubbing against something… it will help make them smaller but eventually calluses or whatever it is will take over eventually and stop blisters anyway. They are still pretty useful though.. particularly to those that don’t run barends (eg: me). If you slip and your barends somehow land on the end your finger gloves can save you a lot of pain, blood and skin. Good gloves run at about $20/30 US. I would recommend fox ones myself as they have really nice knuckle pads to stop the barend accidents happening to your knuckles.

Here are mine:

3. Knee Pads
Again not another bad piece of hardware to have at is can save your knees and keep you on your bike. I myself have only been wearing them for around 2 months because about 5 months ago I broke my knee from going down a hill really really fast with a scooter and then crashing and landing on my knee. Had I been wearing pads I could have saved my knees… as a result I lost all strength in my right knee for about 2 months and could not ride for that period, had to relearn a bunch of tricks and also cant bunnyhop very much anymore. Good kneepads run at about $20-30 and I would recommend wtp slims as they fit nicely under your jeans/pants and are really comfortable but at the same time offer adequate protection

I have some random ones but they seem to do the job:

That should be ok to stop you from getting major injuries but shin pads are also recommended if you really don’t like pedal bites and particularly if you are a flatlande. I find that long pants/jeans are enough to protect me from that. Anyway.. hope this article has helped you understand why you should wear safety equipment.

Comments are appreciated…
Cheers
Rolando
