[HowTo] Air [P]
   by Matt1991 | 12 Feb 2007 4:47 pm

The How-To
Step 1: Approach

Ride at your chosen ramp at a speed your a comfortable with. Try to have a similar speed that you want use if you were trying to fly out onto the deck with the same height as you are planning to air.

Step 2: Carve

Whilst riding at the ramp with the speed you are happy with, you should begin to carve whilst travelling up the ramp. Not necessarily too much, but so you don’t air straight up and have to rotate
more whilst in the air as this makes airing more awkward and sometimes more dangerous as whilst going up and turning you are blind to the ramp.

Step 3: Pump

Whilst riding up the ramp, during step 2, bend your legs slightly, and then give them a slight kick during the next step. This will not only give you a better "pop" off the ramp, but also naturally prepare you for the stance you will need whilst in the air.

Step 4: Leaving the Ramp

When your front wheel reaches the coping, try to lean back and give a pull on yours bars. Doing this will reduce the pressure that your front wheel hits the coping with and will lessen the chance of landing lower
down the ramp.

Once your front wheel has left the ramp, you should be preparing for the back wheel to do the same, the faster you are going the faster the back wheel leaves so be prepared for this. When the back wheel leaves
the ramp, you should feel a bump, this is the back wheel riding off the coping.

Step 5: Peak

You should now have the bike completely out of the ramp, do not panic at this point, just stay relaxed, and begin looking for the ramp in preparation for step 6.

Step 6: Entering the Ramp

Now your air is lowering are in the air you can begin preparing to land smoothly and comfortably.
To do this, while you are in the air, look at the route you want your front wheel to take whilst airing, so begin following the front wheel into the air, then at the peak begin to look down at the spot just below the coping.

Whilst riding, your body follows your head, and your bike, primarily the front end follows your body, so looking at this sport will usually aim the front wheel to land there.

At this point you will want to stay centred over your bike, leaning to far forward could cause you land too front heavy and flip over forwards, whilst leaning too far backwards could cause you to hang up
and flip forwards, or if you are landing lower to flip off the back off the bike.

Step 7: Absorb

Once your front wheel has entered the ramp, your back wheel should follow and enter at the same point as your front wheel did, once you feel that both wheels are on the ramp, bend your legs once again, you may
not need to focus on this too much as this often happens naturally.
Doing this has two advantages:

  • It will reduce the shock that is put onto your knees with the pressure of landing, lowering the chance of injury significantly.
  • It will help you keep balanced on your bike, and lower the chance of falling off.
Step 8: Ride Away

Now you have successfully landed an air, you can begin to straighten your legs and return to your normal riding stance.
