[Review] Superstar light my fire frame
   by Loganridesbikes | 14 Feb 2007 10:44 am

Ok, first off, I would like to say that for the 3 months I've rode this frame as a park rider, it's been amazing. The frame looks really nice, right down to the stickers and geometry. This frame comes in two colors. Black, which is the color that I'm riding, and mint green as pictured above. As goes for all of the other superstar frames, it has the griptape with the word superstar cut out on it, stuck right on the frame. Unfortunately, you can't see it on the black frame unless you are close up. The chainstays are D-shaped, which provides extra strength, and better tire clearance, not to mention its lightweight as well. The frame has gyro tabs, so if you're one who likes to run a gyro then your all set. It comes with everything you need to throw the tabs on. The frames were supposed to come with moto-style chain tensioners, but due to technical reasons, they were unable to provide them. If you do however, get your hands on some, there are 3 holes in each drop out, where they would fit on. That leads me to go on about the dropouts. THEY ARE VERY SMALL!!! If you run pegs, you will destroy the dropouts easily. It may look scary at first, because the bottom of the dropouts is ecspecially thin, but no worries, the top part is what takes all the pressure. The brake mounts are seat stay, so you dont have to worry about your gearing ratio. The seat tube, which is integrated, is odd however. They claim it to be a 25.4, but no 25.4 seatpost is big enough, so I had to shim it. It could be a defective frame, but problem solved, simply with shims. Be very carefulm the seat bolt strips easily, so if yuou dont think your seatpost is gonna fit, don't try to hard to make it do so. The head tube is steep, at 74.5 degrees, perfect for park and trails. To finish off, it has an integrated head tube, and a spanish bottom bracket. The frame comes in 20.4, 20.8, and 21.2 top tubes. It weighs in at only 4 lbs 12 oz.

I'm a rather lightweight rider, weighing about 140. I'm smooth and don't case often, so the frame has done great for me. I have taken some very hard cases over hips and on airs however, and the frame is still just as good as it was 3 months ago. If you are a heavier rider, and tend to have a ruffer style, than maybe this isnt the frame for you. It is a park based frame and wasn't meant for much more. If you are a strict park/trail rider, and flow well, then this frame is perfect for you.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • unique
  • well designed
  • integrated seatube and headset
  • D-shaped chainstays
Cons:
  • Weird seat tube size
  • small dropouts
  • not made for pegs

Overall rating 9/10
