[Review] Wippermann 1G8 chain
   by jawn | 23 Feb 2007 11:30 pm

I'm rather hard on chains. I never used to do sprocket tricks, and am not by any stretch of the imagination a big rider, but being a drive side grinder (originally due to lack of left hand drive parts, now by preference) I would still break chains pretty much every session that involved grinding. After breaking pretty much every chain from the last decade and a half you can think of, I was at my wit's end. There was nothing to do but carry a chain breaker & links (and kneepads :>) around. Until I discovered this beast...

Now I sprocket grind concrete on a regular basis. After 10 months of intentionally giving it as much riding abuse as I can, I've yet to bend a plate, let alone snap the damn thing. At first, breaking it was tricky, as I had to turn the links 90 degrees for them to fit in my friend's chainbreaker. Now I've found my own chainbreaker, I've cut the little thing (on my particular breaker) that hold the rollers off, so I no longer have to turn the links 90'. I also needed a pin off an old chain, to be able to poke the Wippermann pins far enough out to dissassemble a link. I still do need that pin, but there's possibly breakers out there that have a long enough pin to do away with this too.

The chain didn't stretch noticably, in fact, a month after installing it I still hadn't needed to retension the chain at all. Cranking hard is particularly responsive. The chain is too wide to fit today's 1 pc guard/sprockets combo sprockets. Bolt on guards can be made to work however, just use spacers. I've rotated the chain so the outside faces in and vice versa a few times, hoping to discover burrs on the outside of the side plates where other plates might get caught. Haven't found any so far.

I give it a 10/10, but bear in mind I am hard on chains, don't mind spending money, don't mind modifying chainbreakers, don't care about weight, don't run 25/9 gearing nor a 1pc guard/sprocket combo. Chances are your score will vary depending on what you require from a chain. Obviously, if you never break chains, then there are many cheaper, lighter chains around. But if you are after strength/rigidity, then this chain has it in spades.

Specs:

  • 12.2mm overall width
  • 1/2"x1/8"
  • Thick, straight plates
  • 14,700 newtons of strength!
  • Oversized pins
  • Colours: Silver, black, blue, red, custom colours if you order from Wippermann itself
Pros:
  • Practically indestructable
  • 1/2"x1/8", not 1/2"x3/16" (smoother running on 1/8" stuff than 3/16" chains like the KHE Collapse)
  • Very high quality
  • Less stretch/flex than any chain I've ever run in all my years of BMX freestyle & racing
  • All manner of colours available
Things others might consider cons (but don't bother me):
  • Not light
  • Some chainbreakers will require modification/a pin off an old chain
  • Expensive
  • Too wide for 1pc guard/sprockets (not that you'll need one with this chain!)
  • Might not work on the smallest drivers*
* Can somebody confirm this? I've only run 36/13 39/14 with this chain.
