[Review] Primo Hollowbite Cranks
   by turndown | 20 Apr 2007 6:54 pm

I got these used off a guy about 5 months ago and I have no complaints. I came from Powerbites, but sold them for the same price the guy was asking for his Hollowbites so I picked them up.

Basically, I came from Maderas and hated a design with no pinchbolts, as I was always hitting my cranks and my spindle bolts came loose alot. With these they have never came loose, and Ive had no problems with them at all except for in the past 3 weeks.

In the last 3 weeks two things have happened: 1.) the first 3 or 4 threads in my drive side (left) crank arm bolt hole stripped out so my bolt wouldnt thread in far enough and would sit crooked and not thread in right, and one of my spindle bolts randomly stripped out and somehow the threads in my spindle got messed up at the same time on that side.

The first problem happened about 3 weeks ago and was easily fixed, went to the shop, got a longer bolt of the right size, ground down the head (had a big head on it, was not a specific sprocket bolt) and put it in, problem solved.

The second however was not and I tried to thread my good bolt into that side and it wouldnt go. So apparently my spindle was messed up along with one of my bolts. So basically I needed a new spindle and a new spindle bolt. I still need to ride though, so this problem was easily fixed as I put my arms on like normal, and tightened my pinchbolts a little extra. As far as I can tell this will last fine until my new spindle gets here, but I still need to get some spindle bolts to run my new spindle anyways, so I may be running this awhile. Today just pedaling around (I put my cranks back on today) they seemed solid and worked just fine.

Everything else about these cranks was ace. They didnt flex on me, have taken quite a beating on bails and throws and drops, the paint seems pretty good condition given what they have been through, and they are LHD/RHD compatible. I havent really noticed any creaking either that people speak of when they talk about Primo cranks, so no complaints about that either. Same with the pedal inserts, mine have never given me any problems the whole time Ive had them. Also, with a tiny bit of elbow grease I have always been able to pull these off the spindle by hand. I love these cranks.

Specs:
-Hollow internal crank arms made from 7075 aircraft grade aluminum for extra weight savings.
-Dual pinch bolts secures arms to the 22mm hollow chromoly spindle.
-Sealed cartridge bearings keep dirt out and cranks spinning smooth.
-Includes flush mount bolts, chainwheel bolt, spacers and all necessary hardware.
-RSD/ LSD compatible.
-(44.2 oz)

Pros: -Tough, beefy, great working cranks,

Cons: -My Spindle randomly stripped out?

Summary: I would pick these cranks up if you are tired of your splined cranks coming loose, or you want something tough and beefy.

Rating: 9/10 with .5 off for each the spindle bolt/spindle hole randomly stripping out and the sprocket bolt hole randomly stripping out a couple threads, because I believe these were random incidents and I havent really heard of it happening to anyone else.

Cost: About 155-165 USD depending on what BB you get.
