[Review] Profile SS Mini Cassette
   by ATP | 05 Jun 2007 12:25 pm

PROFILE'S SS MINI CASSETTE
w/HOUSE AXLE, 9T Ti Driver
Bent Springs (Louder)

I have had this hub for over 5 months; and before then, I had a SS cassette as well, so I've had plenty of experience with these hubs. First impression: The machining is absolutely sexy. Profile doesn't mess around when it comes to making their parts look good. As you can see the color is also very outstanding. These hubs come in nearly every color, so color choice is not going to be a con. The Mini's purpose was to make the grindside flange, smaller. This makes it stronger when you miss a grind, compared to a tall flange. This design also saves weight compared to its big brother (SS Cassette).

Now to review it. One thing you notice after having Profile's for a couple years, is that they never fail, and if they do, it is usually the owners fault. If not, Profile will more than likely replace what broke on it. I have not had ONE problem though. The internals are simple, and tough. The pawls and springs last a very long time too, I've only replaced springs once, on my old Profile. The engagement is super good, perfect for my taste. I personally have not had any skips with either hub, but I've seen other Profiles skip every once in a while, due to gook in the springs or to much lube. Transmission fluid for Automobiles will work as a perfect lube for these, but it tends to quiet the hub a bit if you care about that. Profile's are famous for their noisy engagement, which can be made quieter (by using tranny fluid) or louder (by bending the springs).

Maintaining it is probably as easy as making a glass of chocolate milk. Disassembly consists of a few easy steps, and getting it back together is even easier. As I mentioned earlier, transmission fluid is the perfect lubricant for hubs in my opinion. And I use a very thin coating of that, and my hub hasen't worn much.

Since the axle is aftermarket, and all my previous axles have been aftermarket, I cannot review how the standard 14mm Solid CrMo axle is. But I linked y'all to my review on my current axle at the top.

The driver hasen't worn much, and the teeth are fine. 10/10 on the driver.

Pros:
-Warranty (Limited)
-Top notch quality
-Each part of it is replaceable
-Many unique colors
-Many aftermarket parts avail.
-Machining is superb
-Lightish
-Great engagement
-STRONG

Cons:
-Price ($180ish)
-Replacement parts are pricey
-Rare Profile width issue (I dont have that, seen it though)

Overall: 9/10
