[Review] Shadow Rant v1 Cassette
   by whaaaa | 07 Nov 2007 8:06 pm

I bought this hub about... nearly a year and 8 months ago (checked receipt) and the second i got it laced thanks to my best bud. it was a dream to ride... it was the smoothest thing i have ever riden. (then again this was the first cassette i have ever bought) And i have not been dissapointed since... at least till not to long ago

i got the hub in light blue, 36h, lhd. and might i add... THIS THING IS DAMN LOUD! i remember the first time i rode it down a sidewalk with people walking down it, and when i came rolling behind them... they turned around like i was a damn truck coming after them or something. this hub was a definite head turner in the sound area.
the overall engagement performance was awesome. i probably took it apart once or twice in the time i have had it. once to grease the driver, and another to just mess around with.

the hub itself is on the lighter side, and its not weak in no way. the hub never broke or anything like that. but i did have an issue with the axle.

There was a time when i tried pegless stalls, and i did them the fatman way thus causing the axle to bend a slight tad. i was like "bah, its fine." boy did that bite me in the bunghole. about a year later it messed with some of the bearings. idk how, but later on also, the driver bearings fricken vanished, so basically the driver was rolling with no bearings and rubbing up on the conenut makin a horrible screach like it was screaming at me whenever i pedalled. here's a pic: (please forgive large/nasty looking pics)

and the day i took it apart to grease it (along time ago) i removed a spring to grease up, and the damn thing wetn flying. i mean... whizzing by my head... geez. these springs are pretty tough i guess. never saw that spring again, so i rolled around with only 3 pawls. (maybe the cause of disintegrated driver bearings?)

i might add i was pretty tough on the thing too... i was by no means a smooth rider, maybe on occasion, but hard for the most part. and all that really did to the hub was a slightly bent axle, and a blown out driver. (which could be easily replaced.) but i never replaced the axle because i couldnt find ANYWHERE that sold one, and finding a shadow replacement driver was even tougher. and when i did find one, it would be from a shady looking place so i never ordered it. so i decided to get an odyssey wheel instead.
some other pics of the hub/axle and hardware.

and this little dohicky fell right outa the driver. im thinking it was part of the bearing, im not to sure what it really was.

overall this hub was a dream while it lasted. i wont dock points off because it decided to die. i think a good near two year riding period is a decent riding time for any part. if you can, get it cause its for one thing. one loud peice of work. strong for the most part. but i wont say it came cheap. cause i nearly payed 200 bux for the thing. (lbs ordered it) but now if you CAN find one it should be hella cheap now. get one while you can. or check the v2. ive heard it was great.

i give it a good 9/10
