[How To] lower bearing cover
   by psychoken | 24 Sep 2008 1:39 pm

Recently I got some new odyssey race forks with the internal heaset race.
the problem I had was that the lower headset bearing was left uncovered open to the elements. I know sealed bearings are quite though and grit resistant but with the front wheel flicking up all kinds of stuff I thought id cover it to be safe.
What you will need: go to you local hardware store (I used B&Q) and get a tap washer and assorted rubber o-rings this should only be about £2
this is how my lower headset bearing looked like originally

heres the washers i used the o-ring needs to be tight on the steerer tube or the bit just beneath the built in race

first take your forks out and slide the o-ring down the steerer tube sorry for quality of the pics

then roll it over the built in race so it sits just beneath the race, try to get the o-ring to naturaly flick back to the race if you roll it down with your finger, this helps keep the big cover tight t the lower bearing.

next put the tap washer directly over the o-ring so sorry for the quality of some of these pics

now put your forks back on to you bike and your heaset should now be protected like this

if the tap washer sits away from the frame pull it back and roll the o-ring down a bit with a flat head screw driver etc then quickly put the washer back and it should now be held tight towards the lower bearing
