[Review] Wethepeople Pi Cassette Hub
   by Scerbz | 01 Apr 2006 10:47 pm

I have been running the Pi Cassette for several months. This is my 2nd one since it came out. My first one was a first-batch mistake. The shell snapped, not for lack of workmanship, but helped along by a bent frame. Since then, i have been running one that was not a first batch order. It is a smooth cassette, with 4 pawls. These pawls are the interesting thing, seeing as usual ones are split in half by the spring. Take an extra half and add it to one of the pawls, so instead of 2 sections per pawl, there are 3, thus meaning they are 1.5 times the width. They also have 2 springs. I took it apart to finagle with it, and found that the driver is a 2 piece, somehow screws on.

You can get a 11t, 10t, or 9t for it. It is also available with 36 or 48 spoke holes, in a variety of colors. I decided with the 2nd one, i didnt like the colors, and painted mine. The axle is super hollow, which brings the total weight of the hub to a whopping 15.5 oz. You need to make sure not to tighten the outer nuts too much, or when adding pegs that they arent to thick, so that they axle fits them, and doesnt clamp the bearings too much. Clamping the bearings in such a manner, will reduce the length of time it runs. It has angled flanges much like an odyssey. For the cost, its nothing too special, unless the whole 4 oz is worth the extra 30$. If you want light and smooth, with something to take a beating, get this cassette, but make sure you keep it tight.

I give it a 6/10, seeing as i broke one already, but a more fair score on the new one is 8/10

Costs: about $125 USD
