[Review] Madera Protocol Cranks (US BB)
   by turndown | 02 Jul 2006 5:04 pm

After i got my left side drive hub early this year, I knew I was going to need new cranks. I ran my stock ones backwards for awhile, but tightening my pedals every run got old so I started looking online. Since I had such good luck with pinchbolts, I looked for Primo Powerbites or Hollowbites, but the place I needed to order them from (I was getting some parts only they had) didnt have them in stock so I said "why not" since these cranks were reasonably priced and made by Profile.

So they came, and trying to put them on having no idea what I was doing reallly sucked and was hard. So with help from some online messageboard users, I finally got them in. (NOTE: if you need a walkthrough on how to install Profile/other splined cranks PM me I have a good walkthrough this guy sent me.) I would probably mark points off of these for how hard they were to install, but Ive heard all splined cranks are like that new so its all good. After I had been taking them on and off for various reasons, they became easy to just slide off with my hands. Another thing when I was installing them the arm would not slide onto the spindle more than a quarter of an inch, so I used a 2x4 and a hammer to hit it on, and the paint came off the arm from around the part where it goes on the spindle. The paint on these is not the nice powdercoat/gloss stuff thats on regular Profiles and messes up pretty easy, but not really a problem for most riders anyways.

After running these for a couple months, I really have no complaints except that the spindle bolts come loose frequently if you hit your sprocket alot. In my case it was my left side spindle bolt came loose after about and hour at the park hitting it, which really wasnt that bad. A little bit of Loc-Tite and some time for it to dry fixed that right away.

Specs

  • Now available in Standard set-up, with Flush Washers or with black Hop Up Kit - you choose.
  • Madera is a new brand, manufactured by Profile to their high standards, but is more affordable.
  • These new cranks are all USA-made with the familar tubular cro-mo arms and 48-spline cro-mo spindle.
  • Boss on both arms allows you to run these Left or Right hand drive.
  • Available with American or Euro BB. The bearings press out of the American BB cups to make 'Mid' bearings as used on new S&M, FBM, etc.
  • Fully compatible with all Profile crank hardware - ie/ Flush bolts, Ti spindle, etc.
  • 175 or 180mm arms.
  • Anti-seize compound and Installation/extraction tool included.
  • Black only.

Pros:

  • Good price,
  • RSD and LSD
  • Held up to everything I threw at it

Cons:

  • Paint seemed fragile.
  • Spindle bolt came loose once in awhile (but easily fixed)
  • No warranty.

Summary

Overall, these cranks were really nice and great for the price. I would reccomend these to anyone except the hardcore street person who might hit them alot, or a hardcore crank arm slider person. I would tell them to stick to pinchbolts. But for anyone else, these cranks are mint.

Rating

I give these a 8.75/10 because of the paint, and the spindle bolt coming loose (probably my fault anyways)

Cost: about $135 USD
