[How To] Set Up Brakes Properly
   by Master JT | 22 Jul 2006 4:13 pm

Im sure you know how to set up your cables. Your cables should be cut to the right length before you set up your brakes. Lube the inside too.

These are for Odyssey evolver brakes but its the same basic steps for most brakes.

Tools you will need are 2.5mm and 5mm allen wrenchs, 17mm wrench/adjustable wrench, possibly a 10mm wrench and you will need cable cutters.

Start by putting your cables in your lever and down to your brakes. Make sure the thing I circled in the pic is pulled out pretty far by losening it.

For your back brakes make sure this is losened as well. Not so its completely out though but pretty far.

For your fronts pull out this one. No, my cable is not touching my front tire. It does look like it but there is actually pretty good clearance.

Now take the brake wire from your gyrocables/straightcable and pull it through and hold it tight and
tighten down. Make sure your wire that goes to your brakes are in 1st though because it will be hard to slip it in if you put the wire from your gyrocables/straightcable in 1st.

Grease your brake mounts and slip on your brake arms. Tighten down the bolt from your brake arms with 5mm allen wrench. Do not tighten completely yet. Make sure the brake arms are loose and able to move freely. You dont want to put spring tension on the brake arms yet.

Grease up your brake pad posts now and put them on your brake arms. Make sure EVERY piece is there and and that both brake pads are even. Make the pads touch your rim and adjust them so theyre in the middle and parallel with your rim or close. Tighten them down with a 10mm or adustable wrench or a 5mm allen wrench. Make sure they dont move.

Pull your cable wire through the 2 things I circle in the pic below. Do one at a time. Pull the cable wire through one of them and tighten down with 2.5mm allen wrench. Now pull the cable wire into your other brake arm pulling the 2 brake arms and making the brake pads touch the rim. Everything should hold in place now. Hold it down tight and tighten down with 2.5mm allen wrench.

Your brake lever should not move at all since your pads are touching the rim. Now you will need to add spring tension to your brakes.

Using a 17mm wrench or adjustable wrench apply spring tension. Turn it as showed in the pictures below. Not alot though but enough so the pads are slightly away from the rim. Hold it there with the wrench and using the 5mm allen wrench tighten down the bolts enough so the springs dont shoot back to their original position. Make sure there is even tension in both arms.

Now that everything is set up you will want to adjust how much pull you want in your lever before your pads hit the rim. 1st adust these back. Doesnt have to be all the way in but pretty close.

For front brakes.

Then adjust them on your brake lever/s

Mess around with them till you get the amount of pull you want in your brakes.

For gyros make sure all the adjusters are even so the detangler doesnt move around. You shouldnt have to mess with these to adjust the amount of pull in your brakes. Only on the frame and your brake lever/s.

To toe-in your brake pads simply make the front of the pad touch the rim 1st slightly.

Everything should be set up and ready to go. Make sure everything is tightened down good. Give it a test run and if everything is good do the final step and cut your brake wire/s with your cable cutters.

Heres my brakes.
