[Review] Plazmatic Spanish V-Fly pads
   by Michael Hardman | 25 Jul 2006 11:40 am

Finally I can get round to doing a review of these pads, Ive been patiant and now Ive had them on my brake setup for about 10 months now its time to let you in on something very very special.

Firstly my brake setup is as follows

  • Odyssey Evolver with Hard Springs
  • Odyssey Linear Slic Cable
  • Odyssey Monolever Small
  • Plazmatic Spanish V-Fly Pads
  • Chrome Araya Himiko Rim[

Now this is the setup Ive used for a good two months now and Ive done a alot of riding in that time.  I have come from a trials background and I love my back brake, I love it so much that my BMX stlye is influnced by it, in so much as I love to pull moves requiring a back brake.  Now I know BMXers like to have a brake that modulates well, I personally prefer a brake that locks when I want and need it to.  Now this is whats so special about these pads, they offer the best of both worlds.  They lock effortlessly even with a high level of tension in the Evolver yet they also allow copiuos amounts of modulation when feathering the brake.  Now I still hold dear that a well setup brake is crucial to aiding this specailness to these pads as is the case with all brakes.

Price wise these pads are pretty expensive, tipping the scales at £19 with postage for a pair but what I cant do is compare the longevity of these pads with others as they are all I have used, bar the first few days when I was stuck with some worn Kool Stops.  What I can say is its been two months and the 6mm of pads materail they come with has barely worn a milimeter.  Now that to me, for someone that uses their back brake a lot isnt half bad and I expect these pads to last me for another 6 months atleast.  Now for a £19 investment you really cant complain.

NB - I'm on my second set of pads now but the old ones are still being used on another bike and its been over a year now of use, you can't ask for more really.

Pros

  • Last a very long time
  • So much stopping power its stupid on anodised and chrome rims

Cons

  • Little pricey but worth it

Summary

In summary these pads although expansive combine durability, stopping power and modualtion that I dont think any other pad could rival.

Rating

9/10

Costs: about £12.50 GBP
