[Article] Photoshop Tutorial: The Basics
   by Stephen McCartney | 30 Jul 2006 9:32 am

This is a photoshop tutorial which people can use to change a wide range of things about thier bike. no more think "wonder what that would like in red", you can cimply change the colour!!!

Basics of colour change

I will start with an easy one, colour change (although this can be complicated for diffferent levels of reflextion and "glossiness"). Here is what you need you need to in order to change the colour of a certain part of your bike.

Outline the selection using either the polygonal lassoo tool, or the ordinary lassoo tool (gives a smoother selection). I'm going to edit this already very sexy bike owned by TImo. Zoom in (hold in Ctrl and press + to zoom in) for a nice  selection. See below for my selection. Also for selecting more than one thing at a time (as i hve done here) select the first piece as you would normal, then to begin selecting the second hold in shirt whilst using you polygonal lasoo tool (a small pluss will appear).

Copy and paste what you have just selected, this will make a new layer. i do this mainly because it means you do not have to reselect everything again, and it you can work of the new layer leaving the origional pic untouched. Once you have done this you can start toplay about the new colours. Top change the colour hold in Ctrl and press "u" (yes on the keyboard..) this will bring up a box called "hue/saturation". Hue is what you use to change the actual colour, saturation is the intensity of the colour (so for paler colours, say a mild blue put saturation to about minus 30, depending ont he origional colour) and final lightness is self explanitary. If what ever you are editing is multicoloured to begin and you would like to make all one colour, check the small box in the bottom right-hand corner tagged "colourize". And thats about it for a simple colour change.

From black to chrome

Going from black to chrome is a little more complicated than a basic colour change. I am going to start being more brief about to do the basics, so if you forget something just go back to the first bit and check.

First of all outline the black area you wish to change to chome copy and paste it into a new layer just like before. Now change the lightness of the new layer right up to about +60 or so, just so long as the details are still viewable. Now set this layer to colour dodge (look where it says it in the picture). You might notice that whilst it has went raw and shiny there are still "oily colours" in it. To eminate these, hold in Ctrl and click on the copied layer. This will bring uip the selection again. Now go to the origional laye (keeping the selection) and take all the saturdaion out of it. And thats it.

Here is the finished product, a little rushed, and not nearly as pretty as the origional, but its simpply an example.
