How-To water proof parts
   by Matrix | 14 Feb 2007 10:49 am

Ok, I just read about the snapped FLY crank arm, and an old trick I still do may of stopped it.

So, here is what you need.

1- A decent size candle(or small depends how much you wana use after you read all of this)

2- A lighter or match(lighter will work better as they have a longer burn time).

3- The parts you wana water proof or your bike.

Step 1
Light the candle and start with minor, but problem areas that water gets in alot. I always do my pedal bosses 1st(for the new guys thats the part the pedal goes into on the cranks).

Tighten the pedal into the arm(be sure you ALWAYS grease the threads that will help that area also).

Take your lit candle(careful, wax will be running by now), and drip in into the BACK of the pedal boss. You can do it 2 ways.

1- Just drip it in and use the lighter to make sure it coats as much as you can see with a light coat.

2- Let it drip till it 100% fills the boss. The wax will wipe off if it gets on the crank arm or any part. So, don't worry about overflowing the boss.

Step 2

Next, I move to allen bolts I rarely if ever use once I have them tight(seat clamp and stem mainly).

Agian, just drip wax into them. And remember to grease the threads to help in removal, tightening and water repelling.

Thats really about it. You can do it to any part your worried about. Stuff like the hollow inside of cromo tubular cranks. Just put a drop or 2 on the hole INSIDE the spindle area and pedal boss.

ALWAYS remember to grease ANY PART on the bike when you get it that will touch metal(seat post and seat tube). This helps get the bolts tighter, but without stripping. It water proofs them to a large degree and makes them less likely to size up and have to use a hammer to bang on a wrench to remove(I know some just thought...I just did that yesterday), it really helps.

SO, for all of say 3-5$max. You can prevent rust in some spots(I'm sure you can do it to stuff like open CS/SS as well.

And wax may not be hi-tech...but water can't get past it. So, your water proof in the areas you do this to. And doing my pedal bosses, allen heads and seat tube. It MAY of added 5oz to my bike...and thats a big MAY OF. Making this ideal for people who are trying to go ultra light as well.

To remove the wax, just get that trusty lighter and heat it up. It will melt and run out in a second or 2.

Hope that helps afew here.
