[REVIEW] Gsport/Odyssey Marmoset Hub
   by Wildbill | 06 Jul 2007 5:29 pm

So here it is the Gsport Marmoset for those antsy folks waiting for a review. 5 months ago i had planned to build myself a new custom bike. I had a Kink Defender that i custom built around 2003 after my sweet ass custom STA500 got stolen. The kink took a beating and i pinched the right dropout a tad, i could maybe have fixed it but i wanted a new frame. What the hell i made myself a new custom and needed a new front wheel.

My old wheel was a friends who let me use it. It was a real shit premium that had its axle stripped and was falling apart. I saw the Gsport hub and read up on it. The axle system is marvelous, 20mm hollow axle with 3/8 studs. Supposedly stronger than a 14mm axle yet lighter, no way! Not that i ever bent a front 3/8 axle which is all i ride with pegs up front in the 7 or 8 years of riding street. The hub shell is made of good ol 7075 aluminum, once again i never broke a hub but at least its good material thats being used. I said this looks like it will be really good, i looked at the profile which suggests it cant handle pegs, at least not with allen key bolts. So i said Marmoset, your alil cheaper, i can get a deal if i buy you in Odysseys M7 package so i did.

I LOVE this hub and wheel for that matter. I've had it for 4 months now and had to retrue it myself when i got it since its machine built. I'll save the M7 wheel for another review however. The hub is SOLID. If you ride pegs and are worried about the stud breaking dont be! The axle is very hard to strip since its helicoiled. If you do break a stud it uses the same bolts as profile racing cranks. You may be able to get em in a hardware store but you can order them from odyssey or most any mailorder.

The hub comes only in a 36h option but you could get a monkey which has a 48h option and is similar. I wasn't worried about having a 36h front rim, it takes less abuse and so it does not untrue really. This hub has a slew of hubguard options, you can use the Gsport Gland MK3, Knight aluminium guard or BSD Jersey barrier which is plastic with a 7 series aluminium collar. The latter 2 options replace the axle collars. You can also buy volcano bolts which are lowprofile, clean looking allen head bolts not intended for axles. Another option is the new bolts that will come stock with newer marmoset hubs. They are a 17mm head with a broached 6mm allen key head so you dont have to use multiple sockets for your wheels.

This hub is wonderful and i highly recommended it. I know there are a 100 threads on bikeguide saying the Taiwanese marmosets are having all these problems but i haven't. Hopefully no more faulty hubs get sold, G himself said there was a faulty machine and therefore the bearings were not seated right. The problem has been corrected and if you do have a problem, call Odyssey until they pick up the phone, i didn't have a problem when they replaced my 7K rim for a 7KA.
