[Review] Fly Simple Frame
   by kkmk | 11 Aug 2007 3:50 pm

After a regular late night perusing bike sites I came to the sales part of flatlandfuel. A 2005 Fly Simple, for 109 bucks. How could I refuse? 2 weeks later, I had it. I named it penfold, and have fallen in love. The 18.8 top tube is so much better than the 20.5 maverick. At first I thought, oh damn, this was a bad idea. with a back end of 13', I was looping out of manuals for days, and with the tiny (to me) toptube, I was over spinning everything. It took a while to adapt to. but now I have, I'm in love. There is not one thing I would change about it. Perfectly responsive, and since there are no bent tubes, it's strong. The gusset provides you enough space, and the low tt gives you a good standover height. The one gripe I have about it is that, my first hard session I dinted the left cs after dropping a half hiker down onto the crank arm. I also found that you have to run ALOT of spacers in your cranks to prevent them slapping your stays. you also cannot run gearing higher than 30 and 13, since I had to buy a new sprocket to keep my chain aligned (which has come to be expected from flatland frames).

And heres mine built up:

Pros:
Light
Cheap
Simple looks
Strong

Cons:
Dinted cs first time i rode it (now identical dints on both sides)
Needing a lot of crank spacers.
Made for small gearing.

Id give the simple an 8 out of 10. Its a perfect frame for anyone, beginner or pro (wilhelm had one for a while) yet there are still the nuisance things about it.
