[HowTo] Make stickers like a pro
   by aux | 24 Jun 2008 1:46 am

These stickers are fully waterproof, acid free, won't go yellow, won't peel off easily. I have had them on my bike for a good 3 months now and they are in perfect condition.

You'll need:

  • printer
  • OHP paper
  • double sided adhesive paper from a scrapbooking shop
  • photocopier paper
  • sellotape
  • scissors
  • bike

Design all the stickers you want to make in word, black and white works best. Although colour is possible. These stickers work best on light coloured frames, I tried it out on my mates black frame and you could see the glue and stuff – didnt look good.

Print out all your stickers on standard photocopier paper and get all the placement right with bits of sellotape or whatever (you don’t really need to do this step if your only doing a single sticker). Leave on the bike as you’ll be using them later on.

Print out all the stickers onto OHP (those old school projectors teachers used to use) paper. When you print them make sure that the image is mirrored, this is important because otherwise the ink will be on the outside of the sticker and will wipe off with water. To mirror the image on my printer theres a setting when I goto print but every printer is different so you’ll have to work it out for your self. Alternatively to mirror an image in word you can select the bottom left node thing on the image and drag it so far over to the right that it mirrors.

When you print it out onto the OHP paper and turn it around the image will display correctly and the ink will be on the other stide of the plastic, so all thats exposed to the outside is plastic so the ink will never rub off.

The white paper that the stickers are lying on isnt just any photocopier paper, it’s special scrapbooking paper that is like double sided sticky tape but an entire page of it. It’s clear in the middle and acid free and all that. Try to pick some up from a scrapbooking shop, or office supplies.

Lie the stickers onto this paper and roughly cut around them so that each sticker has its own bit of sticky paper.

So now each sticker will have its own section of sticky paper, it can just be rough like shown here.

So now cut with scissors around the sticker closely to trim around so that the ohp is the same size as the sticky paper.

See how the sticky paper is bigger than the OHP paper, this is fine as you peel off one side of the sticky paper, stick the OHP paper onto the sticky part and yet again trim around the edges so that both the sticky paper and the OHP paper is flush with each other.

The mess. And the compelted stickers.

Now where you got the paper mock-up sticker on your bike you’ll want to peel that off and replace it with the real sticker.

If your sticking the sticker next to a weld you may have to trim it slightly.

And your done with your custom BMX stickers!
