The Advanced Guide On Installing And Setting Up GY
   by Oliver | 12 Jan 2009 6:38 pm

Around the forums i have noticed alot of how to set up gyro questions so this is a guide on how to isntall and set up your gyro to work well.

Many of the people who run Gyro's keep them as they are set up at a shop, unless they come from a fairly decent BMX store or a local the chances are they feel nice but in all reality are set up absolutely shocking and you can get them better.

First of all im going to explain how to install a gyro, if your gyro is already installed you can skip this part

We will assume that you are using this type of gyro:

The odyssey gyro.

Firstly you will need to start by taking apart the front end of your bike.

Remove the bolt from the top of the stem and loosen the two side bolts, now you should be able to just slide off your stem, if you are using a 1" stem you will only need to loosen the top bolt and tug, pull your forks out from the bottom if you cannot manage this due to them feeling seized, you can either get a mallet and tap it out from the top or if not you can get a screw driver and tap some gap between the spacers and the headset. Once your forks are out remove the bearings from your headset.

Now we will start to install the bottom plate, which is the piece that says Odyssey gyrO on it. Firstly you will need to remove your headset, you can do this by either using a headset remover or you can put a screwdriver through the bottom headset cup and make it so it rests on the ridge inside your head tube, then knock the headset cup out by doing one sharp hit and going all the way round the ridge and repeating until it falls out, make sure you do this evenly other wise it may get jammed. Then place the plate on top of the head tube and put your headset cup on, push it down slightly, until it starts to hurt, Then get your mallet and tap it back in, if not you can get some wood place it on top them hammer it, or if your really stuck get a socket piece that just fits in, get the extension and tap it in.

Now we have the plate installed here comes the easier, but may be more confusing part.Put your headset bearings and everything back in the way it came out, do not put your stem back on YET. Looking at the picture above place the gyro the right way, the right angled pieces should be on the bottom plate, placing this loose like that will be fine for now, next you should place on your tip plate by just sliding it down the fork tube to the spacers, if this creates a big height difference just remove a spacer. Now you want to be placing your stem back onto the fork tube, Skip this part if you already know how to fit your stem. Place the top bolt back in (compression bolt) and tighten it up, not so you have to strain to tighten it, just about half a turn when it starts getting tighter to do. Now line up your stem with your front tyre and tighten the two side bolts.

Cables -

Before you fit your cables it would be a good idea to get a thin grease; gt85 etc any aerosol greases will do, I wouldn't advise WD-40 though, spray on a generous amount and let it soak, make sure you get a nice bit in the barrel and on the cable.

UPPERS

Now you should be wanting to fit them loosely, I normally start off by just placing the top ones on very loosely. So loosen off the barrel on your lever, place the circular bit in the slot on your lever and adjust the barrel so there is a line going all the way to the end. Place in your cable and screw it all the way down to the end. Get the barrels on the gyro cables and screw them into the top plate and place the circular pieces on the end into the slots on the gyro.

LOWERS
Firstly screw them into your lower plate and run them through the lower barrel and attack your straddle hanger accordingly. I normally place things down the gap between frame and calipers to make them be a bit closer to the rim so that i can make a good estimate on where to bolt on my straddle hanger, once bolted run through the straddle cable and there you have it, you've set it all up. Now just to tune it.

Pull your lever and see if you like it, if it seems to tight on the pull remove washers from the brake pads or get some plyers and grip the cable that's bolted onto the straddle hanger and loose if the straddle hanger a bit, this should make it fine. You can also screw any barrels inwards.

If its too loose just do the above but reverse them.

Other things you may need/want to do:
Cut down your cables, this is fairly self explanitory just get some cable cutters and cut it or a chisel and a hammer.
Keep your cables in place, I like to use shoe lace but you can use electrical tape/cable ties. Whatever floats your boat really.

Any questions PM me or post in this thread.

MAINTANENCE

You must NOT grease the main gyro compound part, they are designed so dirt can flow through them, if you grease them it eliminates the whole point of the gyro. If you do happen to get some grease in your gyro, just get some petrol/white spirit/ aclohol and douse it in it, should do the trick fine. A tiny bit of thin cable type lube wont harm it ;]

Re grease your cables every month at the least, I like to do mine every 2 weeks when i run a gyro.
